Tahiti, circa 1910
by Lucien Gauthier

For more than fifteen years, Lucien Gauthier photographed the beauty of the Polynesian people. Often referred to as the Paul Gauguin of photography, Gauthier appears to have been heavily influenced by Gauguin’s work. In this photograph, the profile of the young woman is strikingly similar to the pose of the woman in Gauguin’s Le Mois de Marie. Interestingly, there are no known vintage prints of this image as the negative from which this photograph is created was discovered in 2001.
