Train in the White Mountains

from 75€

United States, circa 1895
Photographer Unidentified

The Frankenstein trestle, pictured here, was originally built in 1875 and spans a 170 meter crevasse in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Named after a little known American artist, not after the book by Mary Shelley, the trestle was considered then, and is still considered now, an engineering marvel. The unknown photographer of this image managed to perfectly capture the train in mid-crossing, but it is evident that he was expected as the engineers, conductors, and even the passengers in the last car can be visibly seen leaning out of the train to be part of the photo.
