A man with little formal education, Edward Barnard began working as a photographer’s assistant at the age of nine and ended his career as a professor of astronomy at the University of Chicago. During his time in Chicago, Barnard became one of the pioneers of astrophotography, taking breathtaking images of the Milky Way, dark nebula and other astronomical phenomena, including this remarkable image of a rare total solar eclipse.
