Ratha Yatra of Jagannath

from 75€

India, circa 1868
By Samuel Bourne

Jagannath is a Sanskrit name used to describe a deity form of Krishna (a God of the Hindu religion). Rathayatra of Jagannath is a festival in which huge chariots adorned with images of the deity are pulled by devotees through the towns and villages of India. This image, taken by the Englishman Samuel Bourne, provides a sense of the inevitable forward movement that marked these processions and helps explain how the English word ‘juggernaut’ was derived from them.
