Palace in the Lake

from 75€

India, 1873
by Colin Murray

Located on Lake Pichola near the city of Udaipur, the Lake Palace is a architectural gem that remains from the days of the Maharanas (rulers of the ancient kingdom of Mewar which lies in what is now Rajasthan in Northern India.) Built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, the palace occupies the entire island of Jag Niwas and was used as a summer retreat. This image, by Colin Murray, shows boatman of the Lake in the foreground and the palace, appearing to miraculously rise up out of the water, in the distance.
