Taken from the shores of Lake Ashi, located in a scenic and mountainous region near Hakone Village (just outside of Tokyo), this image of a serene boat floating on the lake and Mt Fuji in the misty distance, provides a wonderful sense of Japan of the late 19th century. Attributed to Kusakabe Kimbei, this photograph was hand painted on the original albumen print as practical film for creating color photographs was not invented until the early 20th century.
