United States, circa 1885
Eadweard Muybridge

The English photographer Eadweard Muybridge was a brilliant and eccentric photographer who gained worldwide fame photographing animal and human movement imperceptible to the human eye. The culmination of his work was a book published in 1887 under the title of Animal Locomotion that contains 781 different prints showing animal and human sequences of movement. The four photographs presented here (Bird in Flight, Bison Cantering, Horse Jumping and Woman in White) are consummate examples of this work.
