Atlanta, Georgia, 1936

Walker Evans’ goal as a photographer was to create powerful images that were literate, authoritative, and transcendent.” He strived to take ordinary subjects and not only create a visually rich image, but one that also documented the contrasts that existed in the world around him. This photograph of an auto parts shop in Atlanta, Georgia is no exception; as the United States was coming out of The Great Depression, the patrons looking in on the repairs (including a woman in a fur coat), provide a wonderful contrast to the shop and its accouterments.
