California, 1943
by Ansel Adams

The iconic American photographer Ansel Adams is known as one of the world’s most renown landscape photographers. This image of a range of hills on the eastern slope of Sierra Nevada, embodies Adam’s credo, “I believe in beauty. I believe in stones and water, air and soil, people and their future and their fate.”  This image, taken from Manzanar, one of ten Japanese internment camps during WWII, gives life to Adam’s desire “to show how [the japanese], suffering under a great injustice…had overcome the sense of defeat and dispair [sic] by building for themselves a vital community in an arid (but magnificent) environment.”
